When interpreter Toussaint Charbonneau, a French Canadian fur trader living among the Hidatsas, and his Shoshone Indian wife, Sacagawea, joined the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804, they headed into country largely unknown to them, as it was to Thomas Jefferson's hand-picked explorers. There is little doubt as to the importance of Sacagawea's presence on the journey. She has become a near-legendary figure for her role as interpreter, guide, and "token of peace". Toussaint, however, has been maligned in both fiction and nonfiction alike - Lewis himself called him "a man of no peculiar merit". W. Dale Nelson offers a frank and honest portrayal of Toussaint, suggesting his character has perhaps been judged too harshly. He was indeed valuable as an interpreter and no doubt helpful with his knowledge of the Indian tribes the group encountered. For example, Toussaint proved his worth in negotiations with the Shoshones for much-needed horses, and with his experience as a fur trader, he always seemed to strike a better bargain than his companions. During the expedition Sacagawea gave birth to a son, Jean Baptiste. With her death in 1812, Clark assumed custody of her son and Toussaint returned to his life on the upper Missouri. Surviving his wife by almost three decades, Toussaint worked under Clark (then Superintendent of Indian Affairs in St. Louis) as an interpreter for government officials, explorers, artists, and visiting dignitaries. 1. It is fall 1759. The saga of Jack Frake and Hugh Kenrick moves to Caxton, a small trading town on the York River in Virginia, some miles up the wide river from Yorktown. Jack Frake, after having served his eight-year indenture, is a successful tobacco planter, having inherited his property from his former master, with whom he formed a close father-son relationship. He married the master's daughter, but she and her son died in childbirth. His close friend on the plantation is John Proudlocks, an Indian whom he taught to read. Other planters' properties lay on the outskirts of Caxton, including Reese Vishonn's, the largest planter. Hugh Kenrick arrives in Caxton on the Sparrowhawk on the very day news arrives of General Wolfe's victory over Montcalm in Quebec. He has spent several years in Philadelphia, attending an academy and learning the trade and business in the shop of Otis Talbot, a merchant he met years before in England. After touring a bankrupt plantation, Brougham Hall, with Talbot, he decides to purchase it--and its slaves. He is invited to a victory ball at Reece Vishonn's great house at his plantation, Enderly. There he meets Étaín McRae, the daughter of a Scottish trader, and Jack Frake. As gossip and rumors fly around Caxton about Hugh Kenrick's status and his intentions, Hugh decides on a name for his new possession: Meum Hall--My Hall. Hugh is invited to call on Francis Fauquier, Esquire, lieutenant governor of Virginia, in Williamsburg. In the governor's mansion, the lieutenant governor and Hugh have a frank exchange of views on the war, on North America, on the Indians, and on Britain's mercantilist hold on the colonies. 1. You will approach your trading activities sensibly. Taps into the minds of today's trading superstars to reveal the secrets of their astonishing success In these absorbing interviews with star performers in the financial markets, Schwager humanizes the mechanics and psychology behind the trading world in such sophisticated instruments as currencies, stock options, commodity futures, and mutual-fund accounts by individuals, investment firms and group-trading computerized 'money machines.' One trader focuses on market response to news events, another calculates mathematical probabilities--one even cocks an ear to the noise level on the exchange floor. All rank assiduous research, self-confidence, a specific plan and the courage to cut losses among essentials to success. Few consider their work gambling, but Schwager entertainingly argues that a successful trader needs many of the qualities of a good poker player. Though the subject matter is esoteric, there is much here to attract the general reader, and Schwager appends a 'primer' of technical basics. You may not know their names, but they are the trading elite--a select group of super-money makers whose trading prowess has become the stuff of legend. They are speculators in everything from stocks and bonds to options and commodity futures who make millions--often in a matter of hours--and leave their peers in the dust. In this enthralling sequel to his international bestseller, Market Wizards, Jack Schwager interviews these stars, asking the questions that everyone with an interest in the financial markets would love know the answers to and receiving the kind of frank, occasionally bewildering answers that make this book as much a page-turner as its predecessor. * Interviews with spectacular winners across the full spectrum of financial markets, revealing how they do it and what, personally, separates them from the herd * Superstar traders describe the financial strategies behind their phenomenal successes, as well as the painfully instructive lessons learned from their worst losses * Reveals that, despite their various quirks and differences, all the biggest winners rank diligent research, self-confidence, a specific plan and the courage to cut losses as the keys to winning big * Throughout, Schwager provides valuable insight and analysis to help put interviewees responses into perspective, and he provides a technical basics primer at the end of the book
